Glow Up: The Play Kitchen Edition

Our plastic play kitchen needed some serious TLC. Okay, it was in great condition but mama thought it could use a big makeover. Since I was home and out of work it was the perfect opportunity to turn this hand me down kitchen set into a dream. If I can't have white cabinets right now, she can. Also, can we talk about what most play kitchens sell for? I'm sorry but I wasn't going to drop $200 on a new one. A little work, and convincing your husband to help, can make your hand me down just as dreamy.

The Before.

I'm sure you've all seen this play kitchen before. The green had to go, the border that was peeling off had to go, you get the picture. I rounded up just a few supplies and we went to town. This is an easy DIY project and something fun your little one will love, as mine always says, "it's so beautifullllll".

Read through and scroll down for the after!

What you need. This is simply what we used, you can use any brand of spray paint as long as it says it works on plastic.

  • Spray paint in the colors you'd like. Order at least 4 cans in the color you'll use the most, took more than I had initiated. We surprisingly only needed 1 can of blue and then 4 cans of white.

  • Peel and stick wallpaper

  • Contact paper

  • Sand paper

  • Screw driver to take kitchen apart

  • Painters tape

  • Cardboard or something to place each section onto when painting

  • Beer to reward yourself as you go

The how to. This can be a quick DIY project! We finished awhile ago but life got busy and I'm just sharing now!

  1. Peel off any current stickers or boarders. Byeeee wallpaper boarders, we can do better.

  2. Disassemble the kitchen where screws are located. We took the top apart completely and the counter. You can leave it intact and tape everything off as you go, but I found taking it apart and working on a section at a time was the best way to tackle this.

  3. Set aside microwave door and fridge door. They popped back on for us. I did not change these (check before taking these off that they are able to reattach, different brands may not work this way).

  4. Lay each section you're going to paint on cardboard outside or in garage.

  5. Lightly sand surfaces before you spray. Even though the spray paint is made for plastic, it comes out better after sanding. Don't go crazy, just a little to smooth it out.

  6. Use painters tape to cover anything you don't want to change.

  7. Wipe off any dust, dirt, it needs to be pretty clean so the paint sticks evenly.

  8. Spray paint away! 2 coats should do, but depending on what color you're trying to cover, you may need more. Walk to your fridge, pop open a beer while it's drying. Convince your hubby to help when you need a break or you need to chase your toddler.

  9. Remove any tape, do any touch up's with a small brush if needed.

  10. Now the fun part. Add any extras you want. I used wallpaper to replace the top boarder and middle window. Here is what I used. For the counters I purchased marble looking contact paper found here. Both are peel and stick making it easy! Okay so the contact paper may have taken 20 minutes to peel apart but hey we did it.

  11. Carefully put back together. Some paint may come off when reattaching but you can always touch it back up (spray a small paint brush and dab on).

  12. I attached a hand towel and grabbed decor we already had to spruce it up even more.

  13. Smile at your beautiful before and afters. Taaa-daaaa, you did it. Now find something else to bring to life.

The After.

And here are some photos we took along the way to capture this project. I can't wait to see yours if you decide to tackle this, be sure to tag me so I can check it out!
