DIY Headboard

Updated: May 29, 2020

Well, it may have taken me all of my adult life to finally have an actual headboard on my bed. Fast forward to 31, I feel like I finally have a "big girl bed" (cue laughs). Anyone else? For the longest time, I refused to spend on new bedroom furniture, I really didn't love anything enough to drop a couple grand, it seemed like a waste. Lucky for me, my husband is a "I got this" kind of guy, who can roll up his sleeves to any project I throw at him (thanks, love you).

We're suckers for a simple farmhouse look and after toying with numerous headboards online that matched our vision, we decided to make our own. This was a fun fairly simple project my handy hubs took on.

Rewind, we purchased a new bed, which we both love. If you know me, I have a horrible back from years of sports. This is the first mattress I can wake up to and not feel like a 93 year old. We purchased the Serta Memory Foam Cool Gel (size king, keep an eye out for sales) and purchased a simple matte black frame from Amazon. I'd recommend this mattress 1,000 times over.

Okay, this #DIY headboard is so easy you can do it too! It really transforms the room. Next on my list, finish up decor and more throw pillows, yes I need more.

What You Need:

  • Unfinished Pine Planks- 1x8 (cut to your liking)

  • Circular saw

  • Stain of your choice- we used "Early American"Minwax wood finish

  • Satin Finish Polyurethane

  • Nail gun

  • Finish Nails

  • Level

Steps:

Cut each plank to your desired length. We went a few inches past the mattress length wise on each side (totaling roughly 78 inches long). We also used 5 total, you can choose more or less based on how tall you'd like your headboard to go.

Stain 1 coat per side.

1 coat of Polyurethane once dried.

Starting at the bottom, work your way up. Hold the first board in place, ensure it's level and nail to the wall. We nailed directly into the wall, you can do this differently by building a frame for the planks and then attaching to the wall. We choose the simple route :)

The next plank should line up straight above the previous one. Double check placement and level, nail. Repeat for all planks. If you're looking for a more unaligned natural look, don't place them perfectly together, give some spacing here and there.

Take a step back and admire your work, wa-laaa that's it. You can leave it as is, or add some decor. I purchased eucalyptus and we staple gunned it directly to the board.

I upgraded our bedding and am still in need of a few more items, but I will link everything I can in my #LTKit and you can also shop this post above. Do comment with any questions! If you decide to take on this project for your room share your photos with me!
